Wire forms have infinite uses and a wide variety of shapes and sizes.  Some use include bing a load bearing link with minimal deflection or being being used as a holder, applying a spring tension where a static load is required.

Wire products may also be used to perform as electric resistant units, spring clips, spring clamps, etc.  In the case where the working range is short, they may be used in place of conventionally designed springs.  The shapes and uses of wire forms are limited only by the designer's imagination.

Wire Form General Design information

In the design of wire forms and products, formulas for the calculations for wires of the appropriate cross section and the pertinent stress data apply.  There are no existing rules or formulas governing their overall design, and formulas governing material in bending or in torsion may sometimes need to be applied to the specific part.  In many cases the actions that a particular form performs is similar across several different applications.

Various types of spring steels, non-ferrous materials and various shaped material are used in these products.  Both pre-tempered and soft-spring materials are used in wire forms.

You need to keep in mind the recoil that may happen when forming pre-tempered material.  You must also consider the distortion as a result of heat-treating soft materials, as both of these may cause variation in the free position of the wire form.

The maximum allowable variation in free position, as well as the movement necessary, if any, needs to be noted clearly in the design and on the drawings.

When working with a part maker, being involved early in the design process you may reap considerable cost savings.  This is because minor changes in the part design may enable the manufacturer to use more cost effective methods to produce the part, for both samples and production.
